Edward Chanin

| Para Dressage Rider

Edward Chanin, lives on the family farm based on the outskirts of Tiverton. Edward began riding at the very young age of two and was competing in veteran & gymkhana classes. By the age of nine he was in full swing backing several ponies and competing in BSJA Show jumping competitions at well-known locations such as; Bicton Arena, Hickstead and representing Silverton Pony Club.

At the age of 16 Edward began work on a racing yard and rode in point-to-points. In 2001 aged 18 Edward Chanin rode to 1st place in the ‘Smart Choice Amateur Riders Novice Hurdles’ on a handsome 6 year old Bay gelding named Gunther McBride. With this success under his belt and plenty of racing potential Edward looked set to have a good racing career. Unfortunately, the same year of his first win he was involved in a near fatal schooling accident that cut short his promising racing career and saw him sustain a broken back and a major head injury, leaving him unconscious for several weeks and paralysed on the right side. After a long stint in rehab attending RDA for therapy and regular attendance at a physiotherapist in Bristol Edward started getting back into riding.

Edward decided to sink his teeth into the dressage world and just 3 years after his accident had already clocked up wins against able bodied riders at the Petplan area Festival & qualified for Preliminary, Novice & Elementary regionals.  In 2005 Edward decided it was time for a bigger horse and one with bags of potential this lead to the purchase of a bay gelding named Rhadamanathus (Remi). The same year of purchasing Remi, Edward was talent spotted by the World Class Para Development Programme. Edward qualified for the Para’s and went to France where he won 3 para grade classes.

2010 saw a 2nd place at KBIS at Stoneleigh Park and the retirement of Remi. After 4 years of hard work and success Edward felt it was time for Rem to have a rest at 15 years of age and progress another horse. This saw in Tarina, a beautiful bay mare owned by Beverley Brown whom Edward has been training with in Taunton. Late 2011 has seen the purchase of a lovely new horse called My Rubicon whom Edward hopes to start competing in para dressage in January 2012, starting with the para winter qualifier at King Herefordshire. With Tarina capturing many succeses through 2011 Edward has returned her to her owner for a well deserved rest whilst he progresses on Roddy. Edward was also been nominated to carry the Olympic Flame through Exeter for the 2012 London Olympics.
