...make a coarse calf mix to equal any purchased product?

Ideally use Masterfeed Cattle which has protein from veg-based raw materials and is of high biological value with a broad spread of essential amino acids. When used together with Thrivon Advance (see p26) mixed with the correct balance of cereals, it will produce a mix of the very highest order. Superb palatability to get calves started on dry feed and really push them on.

...use a concentrated protein to “sprinkle on” to trough fed silage?

Best option is to use a bagged protein which is predominantly natural but includes a small amount of urea to aid fibre digestion with a “sprinkle” of high grade protein to encourage increased silage intake. This makes better use of home grown forage. Normal recommendation is 0.3 kg/head but a silage analysis is useful to determine a successful final application.

Masterblend 65 is a versatile blend of vegetable and urea protein to provide both rumen available and by-pass protein which is ideally suited to a restricted feed regime. Masterblend 60 is derived mainly from urea but with a small amount of vegetable protein for a by-pass supply. A high energy concentrate with the energy contributed from the inclusion of oils, it is a “sticky” product which adheres well to cereals and disperses evenly throughout the mix. We recommend 2 bags per tonne mix.

Masterblend 60 was deliberately packaged in a 20kg bag for just this circumstance. Used at only 1 bag/tonne mix it will give better value than just a mineral as it will improve rumen efficiency. The moderate use of urea will complement a straight protein such as soya, linseed, maize gluten etc. as well as provide a full mineral package.

Nothing is simpler than one bag/tonne. Masterblend 80’s protein mostly comes from urea but it also contains a small amount of natural protein to ensure some contribution is made to the small intestine. Designed for straw fed cattle where high growth rates are important, it has added molasses to aid even dispersion throughout the mix.

When liquid is added in the mixer Masterblend 100 is the perfect complement. Packaged in an 18 kg bag it adds 1.8% protein per bag used (normally 1-2 bags/t). An off-white powder product with anti-dust control added, it is designed to promote digestion and appetite of bulk feeds and is extremely effective when used with a straw based regime. Particularly cost effective as 1 tonne of Masterblend 100 can make up to 55 tonnes of finished feed.
