Topical Questions and Answers

 Q. I have a group of lambs that are due to be weaned. Do you have anything I can give them to prevent a growth check?

A.  A lamb at weaning does not have sufficient rumen capacity to synthesise its full vitamin B12 requirement.  By supplementing vitamin B12 via Ex-Sel Advance Weaning drench, the lamb will be better placed to achieve faster and more efficient growth rates. Cobalt has a strong relationship with vitamin B12, so is included at 8000mg to help improve energy metabolism. It also contains high levels of Selenium and vitamin E to help support the lambs’ immune system.

Q. I am concerned that due to the wet summer we have experienced my stock will go down with grass staggers this autumn, what can I do?

A. Please don’t forget that magnesium is a bitter tasting mineral, any supplementation must be palatable. Our most reliable form of magnesium supplementation is our liquid feed, Easi-Mag. If you are not set up to handle a liquid feed, we have a block version, StokBlok Mag Plus.  This is a molassed based tub, with 12.5% magnesium. We can also offer a fully certified organic tubby with 10% magnesium.

Q. My Somatic cell counts have still been increasing even though I have improved my parlour husbandry. Why might this be?

 A. If you have ruled out all husbandry causes and you are still seeing an increase, it may be due to a nutritional cause. An easy way to counter this is to use our Sel-Count tablets by hanging them in the water trough. The tablets release active ions in the water which aid udder and teat health every time the cow drinks. You should see an improvement quite quickly.
