Seasonal Advice - May 2008

Welcome to the May issue of the Monthly Mineral Clinic. In this months bulletin we look at several topical subjects so please read on for more information…

Coccidiosis Risk

This is one of the peak risk periods for Coccidiosis. The medicated ingredients in our Coxi-Clear range of Tubbys will cure and prevent this virralent disease whilst also supplying minerals, vitamins and trace elements to promote strong healthy bone growth in young lambs. Give lambs access to Coxi-Clear Lamb or even Coxi-Clear 3in1 tub which combines healthy skin control and coccidiosis treatment. With the wet winter we have just experienced, bad feet & lameness may be a problem with your lambs as well, consider Coxi-Clear 4in1 tub, with added “Smart Zinc”, to help harden the hoof structure and integrity.

Reducing Fly Nuisance with Repel-Ex not just Garlic

The problems and irritation that flies cause cattle when grazing are well known. Recent research has found that fly nuisance can reduce weight gains by 90-300g/h/day – a big loss over a full grazing season. Now in its 6th season, TUB FLY has been designed to reduce the nuisance factor of flies. Whilst many look-a-like products rely on only a diluted garlic inclusion, this free access tub contains “Repel-Ex”, which is a combination of not one but 15 ingredients that are absorbed into the animals’ body and then passed out in the natural sweat and secretions. This provides a powerful shield-like effect over the animal, which is unpleasant for flies, thus reducing the irritation they cause.

Poor  Silage

In 2007 there was a lot of poor silage made because of the changeable weather which made for a difficult year for silage making. With the prospect of the weather pattern being similar for this year, cut out the risk and ensure that your additive contains specific heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB). These types of LAB provide activity against yeast and mould. Alternatively, use products containing sulphites, again these have the effect of inhibiting the action of yeast and moulds. Biophage Big Bale, Biophage Wholecrop and Biophage Maize contain the required LAB and our sulphite based product Cropshield™ provides the appropriate anti- yeast and mould activity.

Cut the Staggers Risk

Grass staggers can strike at anytime and because cows cannot store magnesium, the feeding of magnesium 2 days earlier will have little effect on its ability to survive an onset today. Probably the most reliable aid to staggers prevention is high magnesium molasses liquid feed. Easi Mag liquid contains a rapidly absorbed form of magnesium which will work its way instantly into the bloodstream. High sugars, selenium and vitamin E will also help overcome animal stress leaving you with peace of mind this spring.
Now available Tub SGM, a Magnesium tub suitable for use in all Organic systems, without the need to obtain derogation.

Making Calving Easier

Working with breeding stock can be a very rewarding but also frustrating business. But life is always made easier when solutions for problematic times are found. This is certainly the case with Tub EC (Easi Calver) which was launched almost 2 years ago. Formulated to drip feed the unborn calf nutrients that will kick-in at birth to aid vigour and  energy and to ensure cows muscles are well toned to promote a “wet”, quick and easy calving, reports from across the country show that Tub EC is now a trusted part of pre-calving cow nutrition.  Building on that success was the launch of Tub EC + Fly last year. Easi Calver tub available with “Repel-Ex” fly deterrent - all the benefits of a pre calving tub, with the added bonus of reducing fly nuisance over the high risk summer months.
