Seasonal Tips

Seasonal Advice - August 2008

With the continuous rise in the cost of fuel and feed  it is essential now, even more than ever, for all farmers to make the most of what they have available on farm. Home-grown forage and grass is by far the cheapest option with regard to a ration base, but for the majority of farms, there maybe mineral or trace element deficiencies that reduce the quality of feed available to the animal. Please read on to see if any of our products can help...

Staggers

In previous years a traditionally spring or autumn threat, unfortunately with the changes in our climate we are often seeing cases of grass staggers throughout the summer as well. Magnesium has a bitter taste, and very often animals will be reluctant to take the levels needed to offset the problem. Easi-Mag liquid combines a highly available source of magnesium with key anti stress elements in a palatable molasses based liquid, when offered free access provides peace of mind both night and day.

Forage Booster

Quantity and quality of available forage will be dependant on the prevailing weather conditions. To ensure you still get maximum growth rates from the available grazing, now is a good time to start some supplementary feeding to balance any deficiencies. StokBlok Forage Booster will boost production from the forage part of the diet, by providing the rumen microflora with the essential protein, energy and minerals missing from the summer grazing.

Problems with Lice or Ticks?

This year we have noticed a large increase in the incidence of tick nuisance in stock; this may be due to the moist conditions we have been experiencing.  Bug-A-Tub was launched in 2007 to aid the reduction of tick & lice irritation, this is combined with a high specification vitamin & mineral inclusion as well as live Yeast –Ex which will improve feed efficiency and conversion, helping to balance the summer grazing. We have noticed that Bug-A-Tub also has the added benefit of reducing the fly & midge nuisance, making it a fantastic product for all concerned about midge-borne diseases.

Launch of new drenches

We have just upgraded our Ex-Sel Advance Sheep drench. We now have 3 drenches, each for specific application at particular times of the flock year. Ex-Sel Advance Tupping has enhanced levels of fertility boosting trace elements & vitamins; Ex-Sel Advance Lambing contains ingredients to promote an easy lambing and healthy, strong, vigorous lambs. We have also got a very high specification drench for lambs at weaning, typically a time of stress and growth checks. Ex-Sel Advance Weaning contains very high levels of vitamin B12, as due to a smaller rumen capacity, lambs cannot synthesise the full requirement needed for growth. These drenches can of course be used at other times of the year when animals are under stress, please contact the mineral clinic, or your local representative to discuss which drench suits your situation.
